Brief History of Po Lin Monastery

Po Lin Monastery is situated in Ngong Ping Plateau, Lantau Island, Hong Kong, Bao'an County, Guangdong Province. It is the most famous monastery in Hong Kong where monks from all quarters are welcomed to stay and practise.

The three Zen masters who first started to develop the place were Venerable Tai Yuet, Tuen San and Yuet Ming. The site was chosen not only for its surrounding lofty peaks but also for its potential in becoming a prosperous Zen monastery. A stone hut was erected between Phoenix Peak and Matrieya Peak. Since then all travelling monks could stay and took part in growing their own food as well as engaging in Zen meditation.

In 1924, Ven.Kei Sau from Jiangtian Monastery of Jinshan (Golden Mountain) Zhenjiang was invited to be the first abbot. The monastery soon became so famous that many monks came.

In 1928, a grand hall was built where the statues of Buddha Sakyamuni and his disciples Mahakasyapa and Ananda were worshipped.

After the autumn Ordination of 1930, Ven.Kei Sau retired. He was succeeded by Ven. Fat Ho from Ching Leung Vihara, Tuen Mun. Ven. Fat Ho's popular abbotship lasted 40 years. Under him, a Buddhist Institute for monks was set up and a new grand hall was built in 1968. Many monks of the highest calibre were attracted and the foundation for a big monastery was laid.

The third abbot was Ven. Tsang Sau, followed by Ven. Wai Ming, Ven. Sing Yat, who is still alive, was the fifth abbot. The present transmitter of the lamp is Ven. Chor Wai who continues to turn the Dharma wheel and holds the lineage as the sixth abbot.

On 13 October 1989, the big bronze Buddha statue was erected on top of Muk Yu Hill, blessing and protecting all sentient beings.

The statue is 26 M in height and weighs 202 tons. Its design is taken from the Longmen Cave of the Tang Dynasty and Dunhuang Cave. The solemn statue inspires a feeling of peace, serenity as well as supreme dedication.
